Adding Instances to the Hierarchy
The Unix Servers team maintains two virtualization platforms on which all virtual servers are hosted. Go to the Records console and open the Service Instances view to look up these virtualization platforms.
Questions:
What are the names of these two virtualization platforms?
- Virtualization Platform A
- Virtualization Platform B
Can you guess on which virtualization platform the Unix Servers team decided to run each of the three new virtual machines?
- The Safety First Development VM will run on Virtualization Platform A.
- The Safety First Test VM will also run on Virtualization Platform A.
- The Safety First Production VM will run on Virtualization Platform B.
When you look at the service instances that run on Virtualization Platform A, you see that they are primarily development environments or test environments and that they are covered by the Bronze Virtualization Platform service offering, which is the lowest level. Virtualization Platform B, on the other hand, has got some production instances running on it that are covered by SLAs that are based on the Silver Virtualization Platform service offering.
To ensure that only 1 platform needs to meet the stringent targets specified in the Silver Virtualization Platform service offering, the Windows Servers team is likely to run all service instances that are covered by the Silver Virtualization Platform service offering on Virtualization Platform B and the others on Virtualization Platform A.
Would you register new SLAs to link the new service instances, which you registered in Exercise 2, to the rest of the service hierarchy, or would you prefer to use existing SLAs?
It is normally better to register new SLAs. This allows these SLAs to have their own start and expiry dates, they can be reported on independently, and they can also be charged for independently.

Register two more SLAs to link the following service instances to Virtualization Platform A:
- Virtual Windows for Safety First Development
- Virtual Windows for Safety First Test
These SLAs should be called:
- Bronze Virtualization Platform for the Safety First Development’s Virtual Windows Instance
- Bronze Virtualization Platform for the Safety First Test’s Virtual Windows Instance
Because Jo-Ann Stock is the service owner of Windows Server service, you can select her as the customer representative for both SLAs. Howard Tanner will act as the service level manager again. Select the Bronze Virtualization Platform service offering in these SLAs.
In a similar fashion, register one more SLA to link the Virtual Windows for Safety First Production service instances to Virtualization Platform B. In this SLA you should select the Silver Virtualization Platform service offering, because the production environment requires a higher level of service.
