Registering New CIs
Of the ten configuration items listed in the previous exercise, the three Microsoft software CIs already exist in the configuration management database (CMDB). The other seven CIs are new to the Widget organization. They still need to be registered.
Configuration items are registered by first selecting the product that describes the new hardware model or software product. Hardware products are used to add new hardware CIs. Software products are used to add new software versions and software license certificates.
Of the seven CIs that still need to be registered, three can be added using the VMware ESXi Virtual Machine product and another three can be registered using the MS SQL Server Database product. However, a product will need to be added for the Widget Safety First software product before the first version (i.e. Widget Safety First 1.0) can be registered as a CI.
Go ahead and register the Widget Safety First software product. Set its brand to “Widget” because it will be developed internally. Select the software category “Financial/Resource Planning Application” for this product. The service that this product helps make available is naturally “Safety First”. In the Financial Details section you can specify that “Widget Data Center” is the supplier and that “Widget International, Corp.” is the financial owner. The depreciation method can be set to “N/A – Cost is Zero/Included in Other CI or Service”.

Now that you have all the products, you can register these seven CIs:
- Widget Safety First 1.0
- VMware ESXi Safety First Development Virtual Machine
- VMware ESXi Safety First Test Virtual Machine
- VMware ESXi Safety First Production Virtual Machine
- Safety First Development Database
- Safety First Test Database
- Safety First Production Database
Set the status of the first CI to “Being Built”. The status of the other CIs can be set to “In Production”. Do not specify any relations for these CIs yet.
